The Fiber Trap: Toray High Modulus Carbon Fiber, Knit Stretch Fabric, and a Procurement Lesson
Last fall, my daughter asked me a completely unfair question: "Do onions have fiber?" I gave her the quick answer—yes, around two grams per 100 grams—and went back to my coffee. An hour later, I was in a meeting staring at a spec sheet that said "high modulus fiber," and I realized the word fiber was about to cause me much bigger problems than breakfast.
I'm the procurement manager at a 96-person product development company in Portland. I've managed our materials budget—roughly $1.9M per year—for seven years, negotiated with 25+ vendors, and logged every order over $500 in our cost tracking system. That system has saved me more than once. This time, it caught a mistake before it became a write-off, but only by a week.
The RFQ That Started It
We had two projects running at the same time. One was a composite bike frame. The other was a travel-bag line that needed a knit stretch fabric with the same easy warmth as the Patagonia Snap Fleece sitting in our studio.
The two projects should never have shared a budget line. But they did share a word: fiber.
For the bike frame, our engineer wrote "Toray T1100 or equivalent" in the initial spec. Then I made it worse by turning that into "Toray high modulus carbon fiber" in the RFQ. I didn't think twice. Toray is a name I've seen on more material certificates than I can count. I wrote the phrase, sent it to three suppliers, and moved on to fabric samples.

The Twist: "High Modulus" Means More Than One Thing
Vendor A quoted a Toray grade. Vendor B quoted a lower price. Vendor C asked one question: "Which modulus grade? The RFQ says high modulus, but not whether you need intermediate or high modulus—there's a difference in the Toray lineup."
At first I thought it was a lazy sales tactic. It wasn't. I went to the Toray official website and pulled the data sheets for the grade families. "High modulus" isn't a single product in Toray's lineup. It's a category. There are grades optimized for tensile strength, grades optimized for stiffness, and grades that try to balance both. The grade our engineer had in mind was in a different category from the one I'd put in the RFQ.
Here's the part that still annoys me: if I'd just looked at the actual grade number instead of the category label, I would have spotted it in 30 seconds. The RFQ wasn't wrong because someone misnamed a product. It was wrong because I let a useful short description replace the exact specification. In procurement, a category name is not a specification. A category is just a search term.
Why does this matter? Because if Vendor A had filled the order exactly as written, we would have received a material that met the words "high modulus" but not the application. It would have passed the spec check on the invoice. It would have failed on the test bench. That kind of mistake doesn't show up as an invoice line. It shows up as a missed launch date and an engineer explaining, again, that material names need exact numbers.
Where the Costs Hid
Once we re-scoped the quotes properly, the price map changed. Vendor B's unit price looked 7% lower. But the final cost told a different story. Certification documents: $680. The minimum order quantity pushed us into a higher freight bracket: +18%. The re-engineering review needed to correct the grade: roughly two days of a senior engineer's time. Add it up and Vendor B was 12% more expensive than Vendor A. That's the difference between unit price and total cost of ownership.
Quotes came in during the third week of September 2024. Prices change; check current rates before you budget.
We also didn't have a formal spec-verification process for purchase orders. That's a process gap I should have closed years ago. The third time a supplier's confirmation sheet showed a letter code that didn't match the approved grade, I finally created a checklist. It now sits between the RFQ and the PO.
No checklist, no purchase order.
So glad I checked the certification documents before the final order went to the factory. One more approval click and we'd have ordered 200 kilograms of the wrong carbon fiber. Dodged a bullet, but only because I'd been burned before and built a cost-tracking spreadsheet that made me look twice.
The Fabric Side of the Same Story
Meanwhile, the knit stretch fabric project had its own fiber lesson. Our product team kept holding up a Patagonia Snap Fleece and saying, "We want this warmth, but with stretch." The problem? A Patagonia Snap Fleece is not a knit stretch fabric. It's a distinct fleece construction with a snap placket. When our first sample came back too stiff, the issue wasn't the pattern—it was the yarn. The supplier had used a standard polyester knit, not the stretch yarn we specified.
Another fiber, another assumption.
I called the supplier's rep and asked why they didn't flag it. He said, "The spec said knit fabric. We didn't know you needed stretch performance." Fair. I'd rather spend 10 minutes explaining options than deal with mismatched expectations later. An informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions.
We eventually got the knit stretch fabric right by asking for a specific fiber composition and a stretch percentage before sampling. Same rule as carbon fiber: don't describe the feeling; define the construction.
What I Changed
That week cost us time, a $480 rework fee on the fabric sample, and a few gray hairs. It also produced a better RFQ template. Now every request includes:
- The exact Toray product family and grade, not a category like "high modulus"
- A link to the data sheet on the Toray official website, so there's no second-guessing
- A certification requirement listed in the quote
- A line that says a quote is not valid if the grade changes without written approval
Before you lock any Toray grade, do what I should have done earlier: get the data sheet from the Toray official website and make sure the grade number on your PO matches the one on that page. When I say "Toray high modulus carbon fiber" now, I mean an exact grade with a data sheet, not a category.
As for the original question—do onions have fiber? Yes. Does carbon fiber have fiber? In the material sense, yes, but please don't eat it. Does a knit stretch fabric have fiber? Also yes. But it won't behave like fleece just because both are fibrous.
The word "fiber" is a trap when you don't specify which kind. The fix is simple: specify, verify, and count the total cost of ownership—not just the first line on the quote.
