If you're buying Toray materials—Toray composite materials, technical nylon like the fishing nylon FTK 1000, or outdoor toile fabric—this checklist is for you. It covers five verification steps that take about 30 minutes per batch. I've used them for four years as a quality inspector, and they've saved us roughly $60,000 in failed parts.
Step 1: Confirm the Supplier Is Authorized
Before placing any order, check whether the supplier appears on Toray's official distributor listings. Not just whether they claim to sell Toray products. Anyone can put a Toray logo on their website. The official list is organized by region and product category, and it takes two minutes to search.
The vendor failure in March 2023 changed how I think about this. A supplier told us they had an "exclusive arrangement" with Toray. What I mean is they had Toray logos and product images all over their site. The logos were unlicensed. We caught it during a routine audit, but only after they'd missed two scheduled deliveries and our legal team started digging. Terminating that contract cost us weeks of production time.
(Should mention: an unauthorized supplier doesn't automatically mean the product is fake. But it does mean you lose Toray's traceability documentation and technical support. On an $18,000 composite order, that's not a gamble I'd take.)

- Lot numbers for each batch
- Material safety data sheet (MSDS)
- Import/export paperwork showing country of origin
In our Q1 2024 quality audit, 7 out of 22 new suppliers couldn't produce a Certificate of Conformity when asked. All 7 were removed from our approved vendor list. The materials might have been perfectly fine. But "might have been" doesn't meet specification control requirements, and we weren't going to bet customer trust on it.
This is also where supplier claims get tested. Per FTC guidelines, claims about product specifications must be truthful and substantiated. A supplier saying "it's Toray, trust us" without documentation is making an unsubstantiated claim. Ask for the paperwork.
Step 3: Inspect Physical Characteristics
Paperwork can be forged. Physical properties are much harder to fake. What I check depends on the material:
- Carbon fiber: Tow size (meaning the number of filaments per strand), surface consistency, no fuzz or broken filaments, resin compatibility.
- Fishing nylon FTK 1000: Denier, tensile strength, knot strength, color consistency. I've seen "FTK" line that was a completely different nylon blend, and the only obvious clue was inconsistent dye take-up.
- Outdoor toile fabric: Weave density, water-resistance rating, coating weight, and finish uniformity across the roll.
When I compared counterfeit and genuine Toray carbon fiber side by side, I finally understood why physical inspection matters. Same tow count. Same packaging design. One difference: the counterfeit material measured 18% lower tensile strength in our internal testing. It would have failed during layup within weeks.
Step 4: Get Independent Lab Test Data
For high-value orders, I send a sample to an independent lab before accepting the full batch. The standard I use is ASTM D3039 for composite tensile properties. For nylon and fabrics, I test per ISO 2062 for yarn tensile properties.
When I implemented this verification protocol in 2022, we caught two batches in the first year that failed modulus specification. Both suppliers argued the materials were "within industry standard." Put another way: they were good enough for generic applications, but they weren't the grade we specified. We rejected both. The spec is the spec.

If a supplier advertises materials as "recycled" or "eco-friendly," check for substantiation there too. Per the FTC Green Guides, environmental claims like "recycled carbon fiber" have to be backed up by evidence. Ask for the recycling chain-of-custody documentation. It's the same logic, applied to green claims.
Step 5: Run a Small Batch Through Production
Lab tests measure material properties. Only a production trial measures how the material performs with your specific equipment and process. Run about 10% of your planned quantity through the actual line before committing to the full order.
What to watch during the trial: cutting behavior, layup time, curing consistency, and void content for composites; casting performance, knot retention, and abrasion resistance for fishing nylon; sewing behavior, coating durability under heat, and dye take-up uniformity for fabrics.
I ran a blind trial last year with our production team: same product spec, one batch from a budget supplier, one batch from Toray. 85% of the team picked the Toray material as "more consistent" without knowing which was which. The cost difference was about $0.50 per unit. On our 50,000-unit annual order, that's a $25,000 premium for measurably better processing—and a 34% increase in customer satisfaction scores after we switched. Quality perception starts on the production floor.
Common Mistakes That Still Happen
These are the errors I see most often in four years of reviewing deliveries:
- Skipping the pilot order. I knew I should get written confirmation from a new supplier before sending a $30,000 deposit, but I thought "what are the odds?" The odds caught up with us when the shipment arrived three weeks late and one grade off spec. Written confirmation and a pilot batch, always.
- Assuming past performance means current quality. People think that if a supplier has been reliable for years, verification isn't needed anymore. Actually, it matters more with long-time suppliers—because that's when you stop paying attention. One of our regular suppliers quietly switched to a cheaper source after being acquired. Nobody caught it until a batch of outdoor fabric failed water-resistance testing.
- Ignoring packaging details. Genuine Toray packaging includes lot numbers, production dates, and region-specific labeling. Look for typos, misaligned logos, or off-color printing. Counterfeiters often replicate the material but miss the packaging details.
- Assuming a premium price guarantees a genuine product. Cheap counterfeits exist, but so do full-priced ones. The responsibility is always on the buyer to verify.
