There are single jersey and double jersey constructions. Single jersey is lighter, tends to curl at the edges, and is common for sport shirts. Toray's textile technologies are used in contract-grade drapery for hospitality and performance venues. If you're specifying velvet drapery for commercial interiors, confirm fire-code requirements before comparing prices.
Let's do the math. A drapery fabric at $14/yard might look like a $2,000 saving versus an $18/yard option. But labor to hem and install the panels is roughly the same, and if the cheaper velvet sags, fades, or needs replacement in two years, the installed cost per year is higher. Tour de Fleece: fiber is not one thing

Fleece from a sheep, polyester jersey from a knitting mill, velvet drapery from a weaving mill, carbon fiber from a polymerization line, and a reverse-osmosis membrane from a casting plant are all 'fiber' or 'material' categories in name. Their performance requirements are completely different. You'd never compare handspun wool to Toray T1100 for a structural application. And you shouldn't compare membrane prices the same way you compare jersey prices, either.
Toray membrane: don't price-shop without a water analysis
Toray's 'membrane' business is built around reverse-osmosis (RO) thin-film composite membranes. These are used in desalination, municipal drinking-water plants, industrial process water, and wastewater reuse. The 'composite' in 'thin-film composite' is a different meaning from carbon-fiber composite, which is one more reason to be careful with search results.
RO membrane elements are rated by size, flow, rejection rate, and feedwater capability. Toray offers low-energy and high-rejection series for different applications. The correct choice starts with a feedwater analysis, not a comparison of element prices.
I've seen a facility try to save money with an element that matched the part number but not the model code. It failed within a year because the feedwater had higher fouling potential than the element was designed for. The replacement cost plus downtime was roughly three times the amount they saved. That's the classic 'cheap price, expensive project' scenario.
Toray composite: carbon fiber and total cost
Toray's composite materials are best known in aerospace and high-performance sports. The carbon-fiber product line includes grades from T300 to T1100, plus prepregs, resins, and parts. 'Toray composite' can mean the raw fiber, the unidirectional tape, the woven fabric, or the finished part. Each has a different price structure and supply chain.
It's tempting to think of carbon fiber simply as 'expensive versus glass or aluminum.' But the TCO calculation includes weight savings, parts consolidation, corrosion resistance, fatigue life, and manufacturing cycle time. For many aerospace components, carbon fiber lowers the cost per mission or per year of service.
The assumption is that Toray products cost more because of a brand premium. In my experience, the causation runs the other way: Toray's manufacturing scale and process control help customers reduce scrap, rework, and inspection failures. Consistency is a cost-controller, not just a marketing theme.
A total-cost checklist for any Toray purchase
- Start with the specification, not the supplier. Define the performance standard, test method, and acceptance criteria before looking at prices.
- Ask for the exact grade or model. 'Toray carbon fiber' is not one product, and 'Toray membrane' is not one element.
- Add lead time, freight, storage, and rejection risk to the quote. A longer lead time can cost more than a faster supplier.
- Count downtime. For membranes, energy and cleaning are ongoing costs. For fabrics, wash-test and lightfastness data matter.
- Build in buffer. I've lost count of rush orders that were only 'rush' because someone waited to confirm a spec.
Where I might be wrong
I'm not 100% sure every Toray fabric or membrane series mentioned here is available in every market. Product names and grades change, and local distributors carry different lines. The right move is to verify current availability and tech data with an authorized channel before you commit.
And if you're buying one yard of fabric for a home sewing project, or spinning your own fleece for Tour de Fleece, ignore most of the TCO math. At that scale, the right choice is the one that makes you happy. The total cost of a lost hobby project is zero; the total cost of a missed industrial deadline is not.
The point is not to avoid lower-priced options. The point is to make sure the price includes what the project actually needs.
