Toray Products: A Quality Inspector's Guide to Carbon Fiber, Jersey, Awning Fabric, and Bath Sheets

There is no single Toray product that is right for every buyer. I've been on the receiving end of too many orders to believe that. I'm a quality compliance manager in the materials and textile space, and I've rejected first deliveries for things that looked fine in photos—wrong areal weight, different width, a coating that was agreed but never applied.

We've audited perhaps 300 deliveries this year—maybe 280, I'd have to check—but the ones that fail are almost never the ones with a written specification. The fix is not always a better fibre. It's a better specification.

Start With Your Scenario, Not the Brand Name

Toray makes a wide band of materials: carbon fibre and composites, reverse-osmosis membranes, functional knit fabrics, and textile raw materials used in outdoor products. The brand name gives you confidence, but it does not tell you which grade to use. Before you ask, “What’s the best Toray product?” ask, “What problem am I solving?”

For practicality, I group buying questions into three scenarios:

A. You need structural materials with mechanical properties and traceability. B. You need functional or outdoor textiles with specific finishes. C. You are buying finished goods by a common name, like “bath sheet towel.” Each scenario has a different default answer.

Scenario A: Structural Performance — Toray Carbon Fibers Europe

If you're in aerospace, automotive, marine, or sports equipment, you're probably thinking about structural materials. Toray Carbon Fibers Europe is a real supply chain on this side of the Atlantic, covering grades from T300 to T1100. But “Toray carbon fiber” is not a single material. A woven carbon fabric with the same fibre but different weave, tow size, or areal weight will behave differently.

Most buyers focus on tensile strength and completely miss the tolerance on areal weight and width. I once rejected a batch of carbon fabric because the stiffness was fine, but the 600 gsm fabric came in at 548 gsm. The fibre brand was right. The layup schedule was wrong. (Ugh, that rework was painful.)

What to do in this scenario:

Jersey is a construction, not a formula. If you just write “fabric: jersey,” a supplier can legitimately deliver a knit fabric—but it may be the wrong weight, wrong stretch, or wrong hand feel. A Toray Primeflex jersey, for example, can offer stretch and moisture management, but only if the polymer, denier, knit pattern, dye, and finishing are all selected for the use case.

From the outside, jersey is just a knit. The reality is that finishing determines performance. If you need four-way stretch for activewear, specify elastane content. If the garment is for next-to-skin sports layers, specify moisture-wicking treatment. If it's just a T-shirt, a standard polyester or cotton jersey may be enough.

The label is not the specification. Write a number: 180 g/m² vs 150 g/m² can change drape, opacity, and durability.

Replacement awning fabric UK is a separate case because the environment is harsh: wind, rain, UV, and sometimes coastal salt. If you are replacing an existing awning, measure the frame and the existing cover before ordering. Do not order by the model name alone. Scenario C: Finished Goods — How Big Is a Bath Sheet Towel?

Now the sometimes comic one: a bath sheet towel. I include it because it is a perfect example of using a common name when you should use a number.

People ask, “how big is a bath sheet towel?” The answer is: it depends. There is no regulated definition. In my inspections, bath towels are often around 27 by 52 inches, while bath sheets I have tested range from about 30 by 58 inches to 40 by 70 inches. One “bath sheet” arrived at 36 by 60; another was 30 by 54. Both were called bath sheets.

If you order towels for a hotel, a spa, or a private label, write “bath sheet towel: 35 x 60 inches (89 x 152 cm), 550 gsm, 100% combed cotton”—not just “bath sheet.” If you sell towels, put a dimension in every listing. It is a small change that prevents returns and “smaller than expected” reviews.

This seems basic, but it is the same logic as carbon fibre and awning fabric. The name is not the specification.

How to Decide Which Scenario You're In

Ask three questions. If the product will carry a load or resist stress, use Scenario A. If the product will be exposed to weather, washing, or skin contact, use Scenario B. If a human will buy it by a familiar name from a shelf or screen, use Scenario C.

The categories overlap. A replacement awning is a finished textile and a technical product at the same time. Use the category that carries more risk: if a mistake would mean a structural failure, prioritise the structural spec.

Write the Specification, Then the Order

The fix for all three scenarios is the same: write a spec sheet before you send the purchase order. It doesn't need to be long.

Here is the minimum information I ask our suppliers to confirm:

  • Product name and supplier product code
  • Finished dimensions and tolerance
  • Weight (GSM or areal weight)
  • Material composition and construction
  • Finish, coating, or chemical treatment
  • Performance claims, such as UV resistance, water resistance, flame retardancy, or moisture wicking
  • Quantity, packaging, and labelling
  • Required documentation, including test reports or certificates of conformity

This is not bureaucracy. In our Q1 2024 audit, orders with a written specification had 34% fewer non-conformances than orders confirmed by phone or short email. The efficient process is the one that catches mismatches before the material is cut or cured.

Three Things I've Learned

“Same as last time” is not a technical spec. If the grade, finish, or coating changes, it can affect performance and compliance.

“Standard size” means whatever the seller decides. I assumed “same specification” meant the same result across suppliers. It didn't. One vendor interpreted a standard tolerance as 5%; another used 15%. Now I always ask for the tolerance in writing.

Communication gaps work in both directions. I once said “as soon as possible” to mean before the trial run. The supplier heard “whenever you can.” The trial ran two weeks late. After that, every deadline in every order has a calendar date.

My experience is based on mid-size industrial orders and European suppliers. If you are doing aerospace certification work or high-volume retail, your process will need more layers, not fewer.

The Bottom Line

Toray products give you a strong starting point: carbon fibre with a consistent grade history, functional fabrics with verified dye and finishing options, and textile materials that are used across industries. But the difference between a good outcome and a bad outcome is in the details: grade, construction, dimensions, tolerance, and finishing.

There is no universal “best” Toray product for every company. There is only the best product for your specific use case. If you can describe your use case in numbers, you will get what you need.

Toray products give you confidence. Your specification gives you control.
